SRINAGAR (Reuters) - At least a dozen people were injured on Saturday in Indian-occupied Kashmirs main city when hundreds of demonstrators clashed with police in protests against an attack on an APHC leader.
Police fired teargas shells to disperse stone-pelting protesters at several places in Srinagar, where shops, businesses and schools were closed in response to a strike call by Kashmiri leaders to protest the assault.
Fridays attack on Fazal Haq Qureshi, an executive member of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, came days after Indian authorities said they had held secret talks with the chief of the alliance.
Qureshi, who suffered a serious head injury, continues to be in a critical condition, hospital officials said on Saturday.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack near Qureshis home.
Chief of the Hurriyat, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, said the attack would not deter the alliance from carrying forward peace talks, both with India and Pakistan.
We want to tell those elements (attackers) that Hurriyat will not be threatened by these attacks, we will not pull back, we make a commitment that we will take this issue to its logical conclusion, Farooq said on Saturday.
Farooq was reported to have held peace talks with Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram in New Delhi last month.
