Real success still far away: CJP

KARACHI Expressing his satisfaction over judiciarys performance, Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry on Saturday said it had given several important judgments, including about National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO).
He was addressing a meeting of National Judiciary Policy Making Committee held at the Karachi Registry of the Supreme Court. The meeting, held on the eve of completion of one year of the independent judiciary, was attended by the judges of the apex court.
Justice Iftikhar said he was satisfied with the performance of the judiciary during the first year after its restoration; however, the real success was far away, which would only be achieved when the poor and common man gained easy access to the justice. Apart from the declaring the NRO, promulgated by a dictator, as unconstitutional, National Judicial Policy was framed while the PCO judges had also been removed from the office, he added.
He said the Parliament had been given a chance to legislate the dictators law into an act, but it was unable to do so.
Underscoring the need of taking many more multi-dimensional practical steps and ensuing struggle, the chief justice warned against becoming complacent, saying the judiciary needed to iron out the prevailing deficiencies.
He urged the need to scrutinise a case of public interest before taking any immediate action, so as to ensure that the complainant could misquote the verdict.
