AWAR The authorities Tuesday confirmed the killing of around one dozen people including eight Taliban miscreants during clashes at Gokand area of Buner District while efforts are underway for resolving the issue amicably.
The clashes between local people who have constituted Lashkar for defending their areas and intruding Taliban militants started late Monday evening. The clashes continued till Tuesday morning. The Taliban militants have shot dead three policemen including an Assistant Sub Inspector and one civilian. The policemen were abducted and later on assassinated.
Similarly, the local people who have already cordoned off the Gokand valley have also targeted Taliban militants with guns and rifles. The NWFP Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain during a press conference informed that the officials reported killing of eight Taliban militants. While elders and common people in Buner informed that situation was still tense and the local people were insisting on the pullout of Taliban militants.
So far Taliban militants are reluctant to go back. Even they refused to honour the mediation of Commissioner Malakand Syed Mohammad Javed who along with Tehrik Nifaz Shariah Mohammadi (TNSM) Deputy leader Maulana Mohammad Alam and Malik Mehmood held several rounds of talks with the Taliban militants who have established their occupation of the narrow Gokand valley. Now the Commissioner, according to Mian Iftikhar Hussain, had returned and was going to Swat for holding talks and contacts with Taliban leaders.
The NWFP Information Minister has also confirmed that people from all over Buner district were unhappy over the entrance of Taliban and they were demanding their early return to Swat. In this connection, he said that the local people had constituted an armed lashkar in the district.
On the other hand, the situation in Buner is further deteriorating when the Taliban militants have refused to leave the area after killing of four people including three policemen. People from all over scattered areas of Buner particularly from Daggar, Gagra and Gadezai Tehsil are consolidating their positions with a view to forcing the Taliban to return to Swat. On the other hand, people from other parts of Buner are also moving around Gokand valley for shouldering the affected people who were taken hostages by Taliban militants.
