A 53-year-old Pakistani Ghulam Badar, father of three, died at a hospital in Barrie (Ontario, Canada) late Thursday night after being on life support for more than 24 hours. He was rushed to hospital after trying to rescue his niece in the churning waters of Bala Falls in Muskoka.
His brother-in-law Nadim Shah (44), girls father, had died Wednesday on the spot.
Badar was an electrical engineer and real estate agent who helped found IP Dosti (Indo-Pakistan Friendship), a Brampton-based group promoting goodwill between the two South Asian countries.
According to details, Badar and his brother-in-law Nadim Shah (44) had jumped into water after Shahs nine-year-old daughter (Rabia) cried for help as she floated away from shore. The girl, wearing a life jacket, was rescued by another relative.
Both of them had disappeared under the water. Police and rescue teams rushed to the site and pulled the men out. Paramedics performed CPR on shore, but both men were pronounced dead.
However, Badar, who was the first to be pulled from the water, was later revived after being airlifted to hospital in critical condition. However, Shah was unable to be revived.
These men are both heroes, Warris said. Everybodys all over the place. Nobody knows how to react, Warris said. Were all speechless and in a very confused state right now. I used to tell him, youre the Mother Teresa of our community, Akbar Warris said of Ghulam Badar, adding he was an outstanding soul.
Nadim Shah, visiting from Illinois, was singing on a stage at the International Banquet Hall in the nearby town of Mississauga just two days before he died, Warris said.
