QUETTA Quetta police on Monday claimed to have foiled an attack on an imambargah in Kili Qambari by killing a suspected attacker.
According to police officials, an armed man was trying to barge into the imambargah and opened fire on one of the caretakers of the religious site. The gunman was killed in retaliatory fire by the cops deployed at the prayer place.
Following the shootout, heavy contingents of police and Frontier Corps reached in the spot while the body of the alleged attacker, identified as Lak Mir (26) was shifted to a local hospital for autopsy.
Sources say a pistol was also recovered from his possession.
Later, unknown armed men targeted the police personnel deployed near the site, leaving one of them severely injured. The gunmen managed to flee the scene while the wounded policeman was rushed to the hospital where his condition is said to be critical.
On the other hand, Balochistan National Party (BNP-Mengal) has strongly protested over the killing of Lak Mir and accused the police of killing its activist in a fake encounter. After the incident, the BNP activists took out a protest rally and blocked the Sariab Road by burning old tyres. However, the police dispersed the protestors.
The BNP has announced two days of mourning over the killing of Lak Mir, saying it would resort to legal action against the police officials.
