India ready to meet Pak 'more than half way'

NEW DELHI (Reuters/AFP) - Indias Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Tuesday he wanted peace with Pakistan and said he would meet Islamabad more than halfway if it cracked down on militants.
India had put a pause on slow-moving peace talks with Pakistan after New Delhi blamed a strike on the financial hub on the Pakistan-based group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LT).
I expect the govt of Pakistan to ... use every means at their disposal to bring to justice those who had committed these crimes in the past, including the attack on Mumbai, Singh said. If the leaders of Pakistan have the courage, the determination and the statesmanship to take this road of peace, I wish to assure them that we will meet them more than half way, Singh added.
Agencies add: Speaking in both houses of Parliament, the Indian Prime Minister declared his governments zero tolerance for terrorism but expressed readiness to make peace with Pakistan if its leadership takes strong and effective steps to prevent terrorism directed against this country.
Replying to the debate on Motion of Thanks on the Presidents Address, he said the government can deal with the menace of terrorism aided and abetted from abroad.
Referring to the assertion in the Presidents Address to 'zero tolerance towards terrorism, Singh said his govt was committed to doing all that is in power to ensure that terrorist elements are brought under control.He said if terrorism remains uncontrolled, it would affect the climate for investment and development and the countrys economic vision can also get affected.
Talking about relations with Pakistan, he said There is no other alternative but to pursue the path of dialogue...It is in our vital interest to try again to make peace with Pakistan but it takes two hands to clap.
