Zardari acquitted in container case

KARACHI - A single bench of Sindh High Court (SHC) comprising Justice Bin Yamin, Tuesday, acquitted former Senator and PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari and former High Commissioner of Pakistan to United Kingdom, Syed Wajid Shamsul Hasan, in artefacts smuggling case commonly known as container case.
Justice Bin Yameen allows criminal revision applications filed by Zardari and Shamsul Hasan.
The bench had earlier reserved its order in the said application. Announcing the same through a detailed order, the bench held that it was a case of no evidence and therefore no possibility of conviction of the accused at the end of the trial.
The bench also held that alleged consignment sent from Bilawal House, then declared as Prime Minister House, was not owned by accused/applicant Asif Ali Zardari and was not received by him.
The prosecution alleged that eight huge wooden boxes containing artefacts including swords and daggers, some of which centuries old were smuggled to UK for decorative purposes at Surrey Palace, allegedly owned by the former ruling couple.
Former deputy collector custom Nazeer Shah and former MD PIA Nawaz Tiwana have already been acquitted by the trail court.
