Balochistan's wheat stock ample for four months
By Bari Baloch October 13, 2008 According to officials of the Food Department, the province needs an estimated one million metric tons of wheat per annum while the provincial department has around one hundred thousand metric tons of wheat in their depots, which is sufficient to meet the demands for three to four months.
Meanwhile, Frontier Corps Balochistan has formed special patrolling parties and increased the number of checkpoints along the borders in order to check wheat flour smuggling from the province, a statement issued here Monday said. During the last few months the FC has seized more than 4,000 tons of wheat flour at various checkpoints in Zhob, Chaman, Noshki, Dalbandin and other areas.
In most instances the smugglers obtain wheat on permits and smuggle it to a neighbouring country without distributing it among the people, the statement said adding that besides FC, it is the responsibility of district and food department officials to check smuggling.
