Ruckus in NWFP over Shahbaz's remarks

By: Said Alam Khan | March 16, 2010 |
PESHAWAR NWFP Assembly witnessed uproar on Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharifs statement in which he has allegedly asked Taliban 'not to carry out terrorist activities in Punjab, when the ANP MPA Saqibullah Khan Chamkani brought it into the notice of PML (N) lawmakers to clarify whether the statement was issued by Shahbaz Sharif or he had been misquoted. Chamkani stood up on a point of order and said that it was regrettable if the Punjab Chief Minister had issued such a discouraging statement.
The remarks of Shahbaz had hurt feelings of the entire people of the country in general and Pakhtuns in particular, as it meant that Shahbaz had limited himself only to Punjab. He asked the PML (N) lawmakers to clarify whether the statement was of Shahbaz Sharif or he had been misquoted.
He recalled that hundreds of Pakhtuns had been killed in suicide blasts, but none had issued such discouraging remarks. He cited some incidents of suicide attacks in which hundreds were Pakhtuns were killed.
He said that the remarks of Chief Minister Punjab showed that he had only limited himself to Punjab, and had nothing to do with those who had been killed and injured in NWFP, Sindh and Baluchistan and even in Islamabad in such inhumane and merciless suicide attacks.
Suddenly, it was PML (Q) female lawmaker Nighat Orakzai who threw her 'dopata up in the air saying that it was massage to those who issue such cowardice remarks. She said that it seemed that some people had frightened.
The PML (N) lawmakers stood up at once, due to which, it was hard to hear that who was saying what. The PML (N) legislatures termed it a conspiracy against Shahbaz Sharif, saying that their leader had been misquoted.
On this occasion, NWFP Minister for Information Mian Iftikhar said that Pakhtuns had so far fought the war against terrorists by paying a huge price. It was a disappointing statement if it was really of Shahbaz Sharif. He said that people of his province were fighting for Pakistans solidarity. We condemn terrorists and their inhumane activities whether they kill people in NWFP or Punjab and even other parts of the country.
Their merciless acts would be condemned whether the terrorist carried out that in Pakistan or even in any other country.
