ISLAMABAD - PML (N) leader and two-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif Wednesday rejected the Kerry-Lugar Bill with controversial clauses that were in conflict with the countrys sovereignty, security and national honour.
Addressing a press conference here in the Punjab House after a consultative meeting with senior party leaders, he called for the establishment of a parliamentary committee to evolve a national action plan. He regretted that PPP-led government had neither taken its own coalition partners nor opposition parties on board about the controversial US bill on Pakistan, adding, had the PPP implemented the Charter of Democracy (CoD) such problems would not have cropped up.
He was of the view that PML (N) had fulfilled its national obligation by rejecting the Kerry-Lugar Bill in the parliament.
PML-N Chief announced a committee of his party to be headed by Senator Ishaq Dar to evolve a national action plan in collaboration with other parliamentary parties as well as people from all walks of life.
We want a national action plan evolved by the parliament which should be made part of the constitution in order to tackle multiple challenges confronting the country , Nawaz Sharif said, adding that Pakistans internal problems need to be tackled with wisdom rather than through emotions.
Nawaz Sharif pointed out that the secret of success lies in self-reliance; adding Pakistans foreign debt has increased to Rs.8000 billion from Rs.2946 billion when his government was toppled in 1999.
He blamed the former dictator and President Pervez Musharraf for taking the begging bowl after toppling his government that had resulted in huge accumulated foreign debt.
He recalled that his government had successfully managed the economy of the country despite tremendous pressure from the US in the wake of nuclear explosions by Pakistan.
Answering a question, Nawaz Sharif said his party still stands to its demand seeking trial of former President Musharraf under Article 6 of the constitution who in his opinion was responsible for all the ills the nation and the country was going through even to date.
But he quickly added that his party would not be a party to any undemocratic move to change the PPP-led government.
To another question, he requested the media to refrain from dragging friendly Saudi Arabia into Pakistans politics when he was asked to comment on media reports saying that Saudi government had recently advised him to stay away from any parliamentary elections till 2010.
