The benefits of swollen foreign reserves failed to trickle down to the poor. Though the Parliament competed its tenure under a political system he was the architect of but he made no mention of the reason, why three Prime Ministers were replaced when he was calling the shots on every side, observers say. It was evident that during the last years, ethnicity, polarisation, division and intolerance increased at every level of society at a time when the nation needed greater unity to counter internal and external challenges. The nation also did not hear from him any word about the citizens handed over to US and the others still missing and neither about the killing of Nawab Akbar Bugti, which gave a horrible political dimension in the country, killings in Jamia Hafza, in tribal areas and in NWFP. His speech also left out the November 3 PCO and removal of judges and that what had motivated him to make the judges second time take oath of the office. Also nothing on the detention of deposed judges and action on the lawyers by the law enforcing agencies under his command when they were exercising their Constitutional right.
Musharraf said much about improving the agriculture sector but what about the protracted wheat crisis made up by illegal import of wheat to other countries and purchase from the international market at a higher price, and the other sugar crisis and the extraordinary raise in other agri-products which led the nation to buy from India even petty vegetables.
Musharraf highly praised the Local Govt system, but how much it was infested with corruption is being revealed through the recent audit of the towns. Observers believe that in a controlled democratic system, the LG system suited to provide him a platform for his support in the office and that is why LG men looked more at him than doing sufficient service to the citizens. The respect of Pakistan abroad was seen at the lowest ebb during his tenure while media, about whose freedom he speaks loudly, remained under tremendous strains particularly after November 3.
Observers say had the country been ruled by the people instead of an individual, the new govt its nascent could not come across such gigantic problems. Despite all that they say, the confidence level of the outgoing President was at a high pitch, which they view, is not new to Pakistan where every powerful ruler from Dhaka fall to to-date has never demonstrated any regret over his actions nor they every admitted the guilt. For we have a system which always protects the powerful and take to task the powerless, they added. But General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf with and without uniform, was so over confident which failed to grab at the consequences of laying hand on judiciary which was supported by over one lakh lawyers in the country. So judiciary proved his blind spot and ultimately forced him to step down despite ruling the roost everywhere, they view.
