Bars response to Dogar an eye-opener for govt: Aitzaz

By Sajid Zia July 19, 2008

LAHORE - Supreme Court Bar Association President Aitzaz Ahsan has said the cold shoulder given to Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar on his visit to Sindh Bars speaks volumes about his acceptance as Chief Justice of Pakistan by the lawyers and the same was sufficient to open eyes of the government to the scenario, staring in everyone’s face that legal fraternity and the people were not ready to accept anything short of restoration of Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry as CJP.

Addressing a crowded Press conference here Friday, Mr Ahsan said only a handful of the Bar members attended the functions where Justice Dogar was invited to address while a huge number of lawyers mounted protest on his arrival, amply proving that they did not accept him as CJP.

He said the reception accorded to Justice Dogar was totally in contrast to that of highly warm greetings Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had been receiving by the Bars on his visit. Flanked by other members of his body, Aitzaz condemned the police torture inflicted on the Karachi lawyers when, he added, they were holding a peaceful protest on the arrival of Justice Dogar to Karachi Bar. He said he was not opposed to visit of Justice Dogar to the Bar but when the Bar representatives were not ready to receive him on arrival, he may better avoid his visit.
