ISLAMABAD - Former Federal Minister for Information Sherry Rehman said that she had not resigned from the slot of Party's Information Secretary and she only came to know about the appointment of MNA Fouzia Wahab as new Secretary Information of the Party through media.
Sources in Party disclosed to The Nation that Sherry Rehman was shown the door because of her resignation from the office of Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting at a very crucial time and senior Party leaders including Party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari were annoyed with her for ditching the Party when it was already under tremendous pressure.
But Sherry Rehman said that she had resigned on principles and no parallel could be drawn to her resignation with that of Mian Raza Rabbani's quitting the Federal Cabinet.
Regarding a question about Fouzia Wahab's appointment as Party Information Secretary Ms Rehman said that although she had not resigned from her Party's post yet she would not challenge the decision as this was an internal affair of the Party and Co-Chairman of the Party was fully competent and authorized to make such changes for running the affairs of the Party in a better fashion.
The sources in the Party said that for quite sometime the Party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari had been receiving complaints from senior Party leaders about the poor performance of Sherry Rehman as Federal Information Minister.
They were of the view that she had failed to build the image of the Party in media and at the same time could not effectively tackle the day-to-day issues raised regarding the Party's decision on various counts, hence putting the Party in an embarrassing position.
Some of the parliamentarians were also complaining to President and Prime Minister about not properly getting the information regarding the Party meetings and the rude behaviour of Ms Rehman toward the seniors in the Party.
It was also informed by an insider that a couple of weeks back President Zardari had also expressed his dissatisfaction with the performance of Ms Rehman and asked her to be more active and vibrant to defend the Party line in media.
Sherry Rehman talking to an electronic channel said that her agreement of Party's Information Secretary was for the period of two years and due to the confidence of the Party leadership in her performance the tenure was extended for four years, so there was no question of her performance in showing her the door.
Newly appointed Secretary Information of PPP Fouzia Wahab talking to media said that the former Information Minister had not resigned from her office, but the Party itself had sought resignation from her 15 days ago owing to her poor ministerial performance, as she had failed to carry out the ministerial affairs properly and it was a wrong notion that she resigned owing to banning a TV channel.
However, some independent sources in the pPrty said that Ms Rehman tendered resignation over the issue of banning a TV channel without bringing the matter to her notice and despite repeated requests from the Prime Minister she had refused to continue as Minister.
To a question these sources said that Ms Rehman was not the member of Central Executive Committee of the Party and used to attend these meetings in her capacity as Information Secretary of the Party and as such there was no question of suspension of the CEC membership.
