Treasury MPs demand Musharraf's public trial
By NAVEED BUTT August 20, 2008 ISLAMABAD - Treasury benches in the National Assembly Tuesday stressed that former President General (Retd) Pervez Musharraf must not be given a safe passage and called for his trial under article-6 of the Constitution.
They claimed that former President Musharraf had committed crimes including violation of Constitution, removal of judges by imposing emergency and operation against Lal Masjid. Alleging that Musharraf’s hands are stained with the blood of people, they demanded that former President should be put to public trial.
While participating in the debate on Musharraf’s resignation, Jamshed Dusti of the PPP demanded that a resolution should be presented in the House for hanging General (Retd) Musharraf due to violation of Constitution and committing serious crimes during his tenure. “Dictators always assassinated the democracy and we have to set a example for others by hanging Musharraf,” he claimed.
Khawaja Saad Rafiq of the PML-N said that Musharraf was a big hurdle in the way of democracy, which had been removed. But there are many other obstacles, which needed to be settled. He said that the PML-N would not become any part of attempt, which would grant indemnity to the illegal measures of Musharraf. “We have to restore judiciary at the position of pre November 3, 2007 position in the country,” he said.
