LAHORE - Rejecting hardliners view to deal with the current situation, President Asif Ali Zardari made it clear on partymen during a marathon meeting of partys CEC at the Presidency on Saturday that PPP would never use Sindh Card to achieve political ends.
PPP sources who attended the meeting confided to The Nation that President Zardari strongly reacted to an assertion by Federal Minister Khurshid Shah and others that PPP might think of using Sindh Card in case it is pushed to the wall by the establishment.
I am opposed to Mujeebur Rehman style of politics. The PPP is symbol of the Federation and did not believe in parochial politics, Zardari told partymen, adding how could a person think of using Sindh Card who had raised the slogan of Pakistan Khappy (We need Pakistan) at the time of Shaheed BBs assassination.
According to sources, Khurshid Shah in his speech came down hard on the establishment, saying that it did not accept any leader from Sindh in the past. They murdered ZA Bhutto and Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, and now they are planning the same about President Zardari, he uttered in a very emotional tone.
Addressing the meeting, Zardari also reportedly opposed taking any confrontation with the PML-N for its vociferous opposition to the NRO. Many CEC members while giving vent to their anger against the PML-N had stressed that PPP should expose the PML-N by bringing out old corruption cases against its leadership. In this regard, they mentioned cases of written-off loans against Sharif brothers and issuance of SROs during their rule to evade import duty, as the weak points which the PPP could exploit to take revenge on the PML-N.
Zardari, however, disagreed with the majority view and said that this was not the right time to take confrontation with the PML-N. The PPP Co-Chairman told partymen that he was convinced Nawaz Sharif would not become part of any conspiracy to destabilise the current democratic order. The President said in categorical terms PPP would continue its policy of reconciliation with all political parties including the PML-N, the sources further told this scribe.
On the question of resignation, Zardari reportedly said that he would not resign come what may. They would only lift my dead body from the Presidency, he said, referring to his opponents.
It has been further learnt that many PPP leaders were critical of judiciarys current role in government affairs. They were of the view that it was not judiciarys job to fix sugar prices and get involved in matters of postings and transfers of officers.
