Ahmed Shah Afridi released on parole
May 24, 2008 Punjab Government has directed to release on parole editor in chief of an English daily Rehman Shah Afridi who was convicted in two cases of narcotics and spent 9 years in detention. The Home Ministry issued orders for his release on Saturday. Rehman Shah Afridi had been under medical treatment at Services Hospital since 16 April for pain in his spinal chord. Anti Narcotics Force (ANP) arrested him with 20 kilogram charas along with his gunman Naik Nawaz and driver Lal Sayed in 1999. The court first awarded capital sentence for Rehman Shah Afridi but later converted the same into life imprisonment. The government of Punjab released him in view of his satisfactory conduct during the detention.
