Why Asif seeks presidency

By Abrar Saeed August 25, 2008

ISLAMABAD - Though the things on the national political horizon are spinning more and more into confusion but some of the leaders in Pakistan People’s Party are as much confident about the restoration of the deposed judges as they are about the success of their party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari in the presidential election.

Most of the leaders in Pakistan People’s Party admitted that the delay in the restoration of the judges was taxing them heavily but made it loud and clear that their party would restore all the judges but they could not give any timeframe in this regard due to certain reservations of the party leadership on the subject.

The sources in the party disclosed that party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari and some other senior leaders have reservations regarding the restoration of judges the way Pakistan Muslim League-N demanded.

The party leaders who wanted not to be named said that party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari was staunch supporter of the independence of judiciary but at the same time he did not want to see judicial activism. And that was the reason he wanted restoration of the judges through constitutional package, which also have a structural reforms package for the judicial system.
