CEC moved against Zardari's eligibility

ISLAMABAD A reference challenging the eligibility of Asif Ali Zardari as President of Pakistan has been filed in the Election Commission of Pakistan.
The reference filed by Maolvi Iqbal Haider Advocate seeks re-scrutiny of nomination papers of Asif Ali Zardari, which in his view, could be challenged as per the law.
According to the petitioner, he had raised objections over the candidature of Asif Ali Zardari along with other candidates including Saeed-uz-Zaman Siddiqui and Mushahid Hussain Sayed, but he was granted relief under the NRO and his nominations were accepted.
Iqbal Haider was of the view that Asif Ali Zardari was elected President of Pakistan in the process but all actions and orders made under NRO have been reversed by the Supreme Court verdict on NRO.
He said that since the apex court had declared the NRO unconstitutional, the law provides ample grounds to challenge the legal and constitutional eligibility of the candidature of Asif Ali Zardari to contest elections for the slot of President of Pakistan.
Despite repeated queries that Sunday was holiday and how come he had filed the reference, Iqbal Haider went on saying that he had filed the reference on Sunday.
However, when approached the official spokesman of the Election Commission of Pakistan told TheNation saying it was difficult to confirm authenticity of the reference because of the holiday.
I am not aware whether the reference in point has been filed or not, the spokesman said, adding he could confirm it today.
