President gives some hope to his allies
By IRFAN BUKHARI July 25, 2008 ISLAMABAD - President Pervez Musharraf just might use his constitutional powers to end the impasse within the ruling coalition, the Nation learnt here on Thursday.
President Pervez Musharraf opened his heart to his confidants from beleaguered PML-Q and MQM, the party bridging the gulf between Q-League and PPP.
Chaudhry Pervez Elahi, Chaudhry Shujat Hussain and Governor Sindh, Ishrat-ul-Ibad called on President Pervez Musharraf in the Presidential Camp Office Rawalpindi on Thursday. The Chaudhry brothers remained with the President for two hours.
“President Pervez Musharraf has asked Pakistan Muslim League-Q to act as an aggressive opposition and launch a countrywide movement meant to highlight the failure of ruling coalition in addressing the real problems confronting the nation”, the sources within Q-League revealed.
According to sources, the President also told the central command of PML-Q that he would not tolerate ongoing political turmoil and economic instability for a long time and could use his constitutional powers to set things on ‘right path’. The sources further told that in the meeting between PML-Q leaders and President Musharraf, the latter revealed that if the incumbent ruling coalition did not overcome its internal rifts and failed to end persistent stalemate, he (President) would not hesitate in using his power to send them home. He might do this within a month’s time, sources insisted.
“The President told his aides from PML-Q and MQM that he would not accept defeat in any case and would continue playing his constitutional role as head of the state”, the sources told. The sources also revealed that President Musharraf was confident that coalition between PPP and PML-N was on the brink of collapse. “President Pervez Musharraf has asked PML-Q leadership to be ready to enter into an alliance with PPP in case PPP and PML-N decide to part ways”, the sources said.
The sources claimed that in the meeting between Q-Leaguers and the President, Musharraf advised former to set the direction of their cannons towards PML-N and avoid unnecessary confrontation with PPP leaders.
According to sources President Musharraf fully endorsed the point of view of Chaudhry brothers regarding local governments. “PML-Q top brass apprised the President about the difficulties of district governments after the emergence of PML-N-led government in Punjab. The sources revealed that President Musharraf asked PML-Q leaders to fully support embattled nazims of Punjab.
