LAHORE - The Punjab government Tuesday notified senior lawyer Khawaja Haris Ahmad as new Advocate General of the province thereby filling the constitutional post that was lying vacant for over a month.

When contacted, Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah confirmed that the Law Department had issued a notification in this regard.

After change of government, Aftab Iqbal Chaudhry had resigned as Advocate General Punjab, which was accepted on May 19 last by the  governor and he appointed senior Additional Advocate General Punjab Muhammad Hanif Khatana as stopgap arrangement. Since then the appointment of a regular AG was awaited.

The office of Advocate General has been functioning without its constitutional head over the last one month due to the delay in approval of  the summary by the Punjab Governor. The Chief Minister had sent a summary to the Governor House on June 3 last for appointment of senior advocate Khawaja Haris Ahmad as Advocate General. Sources said the Governor approved the summary a couple of days ago and sent it to the Law Department.
