Bids adieu to coalition

By MAQBOOL MALIK August 26, 2008

ISLAMABAD - PML-N on Monday quit the ruling coalition over differences on the reinstatement of judges and decided to sit on the Opposition benches in the National Assembly.

“We have taken this decision after we failed to find any ray of hope and none of the commitments made to us were fulfilled by PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari”, PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif said while addressing a Press conference.

Chairing a joint meeting of party’s Central Working Committee and parliamentary party in the National Assembly, he said, “This situation has forced us to withdraw our support and sit on the Opposition benches.”

However, he vowed to continue struggle for the restoration of judges and genuine democracy in Pakistan.

Nawaz Sharif said that his party had joined the coalition with full sincerity but promises were made and broken repeatedly thus forcing the PML-N to take the decision to quit.

When asked about the future of PML-N led government in the Punjab, Nawaz Sharif said that his party would promote politics based on good values, principles and ideology instead of repeating politics of confrontation of 80s and 90s. He made it clear that his party would not be a part of any effort that was aimed at causing damage to the PPP-led central government. He added that the opposition leader in the National Assembly would be from the majority party on opposition benches.
