Bids adieu to coalition

By MAQBOOL MALIK August 26, 2008

“I made announcement in Lahore in this respect”, he added. But PPP again backtracked from its promise. “I remained under tremendous pressure from people, civil society, political circles and from within my party. But in the national interest I deemed it better that alliance should stay”, he remarked.

“In this regard I wrote a detailed letter to Asif Zardari through which he was informed about the whole situation. But these efforts could not materialise”, he maintained.

Nawaz Sharif further told an agreement was reached in the talks held in Islamabad from August 5-7 and every page of agreement bore my and Asif Zardari signatures. The entire action plan took place as per time line. This also bore signatures of both of us. It was resolved deposed judges would be reinstated within a day after resignation or impeachment of former president Musharraf. Therefore, all the judges should have been restored by August 19, he added. But the situation runs contrary to it, he told. It could not happen even after a week and Asif Zardari sabotaged the matters by saying agreements are not Quran or Hadith.

PPP once again deviated from its accords with PML-N by nominating its own Presidential candidate though it was decided in the article 4 of the agreement that in case of impeachment or resignation of President the Presidential candidate would be selected by mutual consultation, the PML-N leader added.

“The manifesto of PML-N is to ensure the country’s progress by eradicating poverty and huger, and by establishing law and order in the country,” he added.

He said that PML-N had decided to quit the coalition after consulting civil society, lawyers, CEC and parliamentary party, and has decided to play a positive role of effective opposition by striving for the restoration of judiciary, declaration of 12th October act as illegal and the revival of 1973 constitution in its original form.  “We avoid conflict politics and do not want to create problems for PPPP in the federation,” he added.
