Strike paralyses Balochistan
By Bari Baloch August 27, 2008 The strike call was supported by all political and nationalists parties of Balochistan including, Balochistan National Party (Mengal), Pashtoon Khawa Milli Awami Party (PKMAP), Awami National Party, transporters, traders and Balochistan Bar Association and people belonging to different segments of life.
In Quetta, all the major business centres and markets remained closed throughout the day. All main roads of the city including Jinnah Road, Liaquat Bazar, Sariab Road and Zarghoon Road wore a deserted look. The transport on roads of city was very thin. However, there was complete wheel-jam on the highways of Balochistan.
The government had already announced holiday in educational institutions due to which all educational institutions remained closed. The attendance of government employees was also low in other government offices.
Heavy contingents of police and other law enforcement agencies were deployed at all important and sensitive places of the city to maintain law and order.
However, some protestors erected hurdles on the road and pelted stones on police mobile at the Hazarganji area.
Police personnel fired shells on mob and dispersed them. Besides this incident, no other untoward incident was reported from any part of Quetta city.
