ISLAMABAD At a time when NWFP Police are facing a tough time in the hands of terrorists and militants, as many as 3,000 bulletproof jackets for them have been lying at Benazir Bhutto International Airport for three months.
About 3,000 bulletproof jackets, imported by US Embassy for NWFP Police, have been stopped at Rawalpindi airport due to unknown reason, as according to well-placed sources, the high-ups of Interior Ministry have not cleared them. According to sources, these jackets were held at the airport after growing suspected activities of the US nationals in Pakistan and import of bulletproof vehicles for them.
They added those jackets would not be dispatched to the US Embassy unless security agencies cleared them.
When contacted by this correspondent on Friday night, the Spokesperson of US Embassy in Islamabad Snelsire Richard confirmed that they had imported those jackets for the NWFP Police in order to make them secure and effective in war against terrorism. He said Ministry of Interior was taken into confidence before the import of these jackets.
We are sorting out the matter as why the Interior Ministry has held these jackets which have been imported for NWFP Police after getting formal request from the cleared, Richard added.
It may be recalled that bulletproof helmets and other prohibited gadgets imported by the UNDP were also stopped at the same airport due to non-clearance by security sleuths.
