PESHAWAR - A group of Taliban Tuesday torched a huge quantity of female cloth at Wana Bazaar in South Waziristan Agency, claiming that it was too thin to be made into suitably modest garments.
Reportedly, the Taliban affiliated with Maulvi Nazeer group confiscated hundreds of yards of female cloth at the main Wana Bazaar and torched the bundles. According to sources, the militants said it was un-Islamic to wear the dress, which did not cover the human body properly. They announced Rs50, 000 fine will be imposed on the shopkeepers if they sell cloth of similar quality in future.
Moreover, they imposed a ban on selling and carrying a cellular phone with camera in Wana. Mobile phone dealers were strictly warned against the sale of such cellular phones otherwise they would be fined Rs25, 000 while Rs10, 000 fine would be taken from the people carrying such cellphones.
The Taliban, who call themselves as members of the Waziristan peace committee, said they had received complaints from local tribesmen about the quality of female cloth being sold at the markets in Wana Bazaar, the sources said, adding that the cloth was not according to the Sharia and tribal traditions, therefore, the shopkeepers were given proper warning to stop selling such cloths, but the shopkeepers did not pay any attention.
