Justice Soomro absents himself from SJC meet

ISLAMABAD - Sindh High Court (SHC)Judge, Justice Afzal Soomro, did not appear before the Supreme
Judicial Council (SJC)s meeting held Saturday to hear a complaint sent against him by Chief Justice SHC.
Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry, who is also Chairman SJC, chaired the meeting, while members of
the Council Justice Javed Iqbal and Justice Sardar Muhammad Raza Khan, senior most judges of the Supreme
Court, Justice Tariq Pervez, Chief Justice Peshawar High Court, Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif, Chief
Justice Lahore High Court, the senior most chief justices of the high courts, and Dr Faqir Hussain, Registrar,
Supreme Court of Pakistan also attended the meeting.
Justice Muhammad Afzal Soomro did not appear before the Council despite serving of notice and knowledge of
proceedings against him.
The Council recorded evidence of one of the witnesses and postponed the hearing for recording the statement
of the Registrar, High Court of Sindh on the next date of hearing as he has been directed to produce the
documents, details of which have been handed over to him.
The Council observed that the respondent, Justice Muhammad Afzal Soomro, is at liberty to join the
proceedings, on the next date of hearing, if he so desires, a press statement issued here stated.
The Council will resume proceedings on 3rd October 2009 in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, the statement
further stated.
