LAHO RE The cash-strapped Pakistan Railways Wednesday closed temporarily all cargo and 115 passenger trains due to unavailability of locomotives. According to daily report of the department, out of 540 total locomotives only 86 are operational. However, the management has decided to close 11 more engines and 115 passenger trains at various branch and long routes. An official of the department seeking anonymity said the closing of trains would continue in the coming days as well. Closing of trains is the permanent feature of railways, but 115 was the highest number in a day in the history of public utility, the official said. The management has recently taken various steps by reshuffling the officers on the posts they had held for years and by introducing austerity measures within the department, but it is widely considered that the rail needed financial injection of millions of rupees to overcome the severe crises, he said. Railways is facing acute shortage of locomotives, the sources said, adding the PR had abandoned the Air conditioned couches in the country and now no AC couch is operational in the railways passenger fleet. Out of 68 power couches, only 23 were operational, the sources said.
