MUMBAI (Agencies) - Anjali Waghmare, the lawyer appointed by a special court for 26/11 accused Ajmal Kasab, withdrew from the case on Monday night, reported Indian media.
Waghmare said she was taking the step keeping in mind public sentiment. The statement came minutes after suspected Shiv Sena activists attacked her residence and shouted slogans.
Nearly 50 protestors gathered outside her Worli house and began pelting stones around 23:45 hrs IST, police said.
Two police vans were rushed to the spot to disperse the crowd, police said. Waghmare has also been given a security cover.
Earlier, India on Monday appointed a lawyer for the lone militant suspect captured by police during the Mumbai attacks, four months after his high-profile arrest. "We have appointed a lawyer for you," judge MH Tahiliani told Ajmal Amir Iman, also known as Kasab, during a 20-minute pre-trial hearing at a Mumbai court. "Her name is Anjali Waghmare."
Iman, wearing trousers, a navy blue t-shirt and sporting a thin beard, replied in Hindi via videolink from the jail where he is on remand: "That is fine by me."
On March 23, Kasab, who had earlier sought consular access from Pakistan, had requested the court to provide a lawyer at the expense of the state, in the absence of a response from Islamabad.
Following the request, the court had prepared a panel of 17 lawyers. Of the 17 advocates, Waghmare name was approved by the judge to appear for Kasab.
