New drug reduces risk of heart attack, strokes

September 3, 2008

ISLAMABAD (Online) "A drug used to lower blood pressure also cuts the risk of cardiovascular death, heart attack or stroke in people who are unable to tolerate a readily available and effective treatment.

The study on the drug, telmisartan, was led by Salim Yusuf and Koon Teo, professors at the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine of McMaster University, Canada.  “The remarkable tolerability of telmisartan is emphasised by the fact that fewer individuals stop medication if they were receiving telmisartan compared to a placebo,” said Teo, the project director.
