Unemployment - A nightmare

By Noor-ul Ain June 7, 2008

The founder of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, had dreamt of exploiting the immense natural resources of the country for the best possible benefit of the people.
Accordingly, he eulogized the people to "work, work and work" to make Pakistan a prosperous state where Muslims of the Sub-continent would have better religious, economic and financial freedom.
After over fifty years, the dream of Quaid-e-Azam stills remains to be materialized as the successive governments failed to exploit the natural and human resources wisely. Arguably, the economy is in such a worsening state, which the country never experienced before. The biggest portion of the budget today goes towards the payments of foreign debts.
Little is left for education health and development. This has taken a serious toll on the employment opportunities in the country where finding a job at all levels is becoming harder by each passing day due to frequent lay-offs in the public sector in particular and private sector in general.
Unemployment is a major problem in Pakistan. When unemployment is high, resources go wasted and people's incomes decrease; during such periods, economic distress also spills over to affect peoples emotions and family life. Political instability, social unrest and economic insecurity is they result of unemployment. The link between unemployment and crime has also been well established.
In Pakistan unemployment rate is increasing in both rural and urban areas but in rural areas it is greater as compared to urban areas. Because of industries there are more chances of employment in urban areas. According to labour force survey 2006-2007, the rate of open unemployment was 6.50%.
The level of unemployment is moving up. Nationalization of industrial units very badly affected the investment industrial sector. Employment in private sector absolutely stopped for many years. Non-stop increasing population is also a main reason. Vacancies are less but job seekers are more than that. Our educational system is also responsible.
They want to get only some whit - collar job. Unnecessary and frequent strikes in factories, lack of infrastructure facilities, telecommunication and transportation also prevent the industrialist from setting up new industries.
Main problem of Pakistan is that whenever a new technology comes then all people start studying about that.
Then at the end, you will see ten thousand students of a particular field against 5 or 10 job vacancies.
