Promotion of tourism urged

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The country's potential to become a tourist destination and attractive place should be fully exploited for socio-economic development, because it is endowed with rich flora and fauna and a true haven for the adventure and nature lovers.
"We can alleviate poverty and earn a lot of precious foreign exchange by realising the true potential of tourism sector in Pakistan", Mrs Shirin Waljis a recipient of Tamgha-i-Imtiaz (Presidential Pride of Performance) and life member of Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA), told the agency in an exclusive interview here on Sunday.
Mrs Shirin Waljis, who was also pioneer in Pakistan's travel trade, called for implementation of tourism policy in its letter and spirit for the benefit of the country and its people. She was also of the opinion that like other associations and bodies Tour Operators should also be encouraged to form their forums for the promotion of tourism sector in the country.
She further said that Tourism Act, which was formulated by late Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, should be given focus to boost the tourism sector and its business for the economic development of the country.
"We can also raise the living standard of the people, especially the common man, by boosting tourism sector in the country", she stressed.
