Lawyers boycott dist courts proceedings

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The lawyers community on the call of Islamabad Bar Association (IBA) here Tuesday observed a complete strike at district courts in protest against May 12 incidents in Karachi two years ago.
President IBA Niazullah Niazi said that the lawyer community showed complete solidarity with the countrymen by boycotting courts’ proceedings.
“We want a judicial inquiry into the tragic incidents of May 12 and action against those responsible.”
He said the lawyer community had waged a peaceful movement for two years for the rule of law along with active support of media and civil society members.
What had happened in Karachi on this day two years ago was “lamentable and condemnable,” he said. He said the lawyer community with their struggle showed that they were united in the past and would remain so in future.
Meanwhile ,the lawyers community on the call of Islamabad High Court Bar Association here on Tuesday observed a complete strike in protest against May 12 incidents two years back during a visit of the then deposed Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to port city of Karachi. The lawyers community did not appear before eight single benches and four division benches in pursuance of their cases and the cases were relisted.
President IHC Bar Association Sajjad Afzal Cheema told this news agency that the lawyers’ community showed unity by boycotting the court’s proceedings.
He said it was for the first time after the formation of elected body that lawyers reciprocated call of strike at the IHC.
Terming the May 12 incident as tragic, he said the lawyer community throughout the country were united for the just cause of rule of law and supremacy of Constitution and they would not desist from offering sacrifices.
