ISLAMABAD- The city streets on Monday echoed with “Go Musharraf Go” slogans as the people celebrated his resignation at large.

Soon after the former president announced to step down in his televised address to the nation, hundreds of workers of various political parties, civil society’s activists, lawyers and general public spontaneously gathered in front of Parliament House, Aabpara Market and Zardari House in the federal capital.

Main roads of the city, which were deserted at the time of the ‘impatiently awaited speech’, witnessed a heavy rush of traffic soon after Musharraf announced to quit the presidency. Many persons among the overjoyed crowds at various places told this scribe that cell phones of their relatives and friends were responding ‘busy’ as every one were trying to take the lead in spreading the news of Musharraf’s ouster.

The jubilant inhabitants of the capital city were congratulating one another, chanting anti-Musharraf and pro-democracy slogans and distributed sweets. A group of enthusiastic young students from Balochistan presented traditional folk dance.

Activists of the lawyers’ movement reached in front of the parliament, where they offered thanksgiving prayers and chanted slogans against Musharraf and his close aides. They shouted, “Hang him up, don’t let him go”. So pleased were the lawyers and representatives of civil society that they burst into tears while embracing and congratulating each other.
