Embassy dances the night away on day of Marriott blast

By SIKANDER SHAHEEN September 24, 2008

It appears as if the foolproof security measures being adopted at Diplomatic Enclave have turned out to be soundproof either since amid high pitched music, coupled with some thrilling dancing stunts, those at the club, including some respected diplomats and dignified foreigners, had gone indifferently numb to hear the cries and shrieks of those at the gruesome incident at the nearby Agha Khan Road.

What the club did on Saturday last was neither any crime nor any infringement of Pakistani law. Yet there are some diplomatic customs, traditions and norms that are even more binding then the law of the land itself. Had the same sort of incident taken place in a western European state or US, the diplomatic missions would have remained closed for at least a couple of days as a mark of their heartfelt sympathies towards sufferers. But in case of third world, the diplomatic circles like those of this particular country are too busy to postpone their cultural gatherings. When contacted on telephone, the management of the said club refused to offer comments in this regard.
