Ordinance for senior citizens finalised

By FOZIA AZAM August 28, 2008

ISLAMABAD - The Ministry of Social Welfare is all set to table the much-awaited Pakistan Senior Citizens Ordinance 2008 before the Federal Cabinet, TheNation learnt reliably here on Wednesday.

It took over five years for the Ministry of Social Welfare to finalise the draft of this Ordinance after consultations with the provinces.

“The Ministry of Social Welfare had started work on the Pakistan Senior Citizens Welfare Ordinance in 2003 but it hit snags in the following years despite being a dire need for senior citizens”, said an official, adding that the draft is now ready after the inordinate delay.

As per procedure, the ordinance has to be submitted before the cabinet for getting approval. Later, it would be sent to the Law Division for vetting.

After getting back the ordinance from the Law Division, the Social Welfare Ministry would submit Pakistan Senior Citizens Ordinance 2008 before the cabinet for formal approval.
