Ordinance for senior citizens finalised

By FOZIA AZAM August 28, 2008

The Prime Minister would be the Patron-in-Chief of the Council, which would comprise 21 members.

The council will also generate funds for providing financial assistance to the senior citizens. These funds will be administered and controlled directly by the council through a transparent framework.

Explaining the delay in finalising the ordinance, the ministry officials say the detailed and comprehensive consultations with the provinces and including their recommendations in the final draft took more than the expected time.

In addition, the Ministry of Social Welfare has to further consult all the relevant ministries, including Ministry of Health, Ministry of Women Development, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Railways, the official also pointed out.

“It took us long as we have to take all the relevant stakeholders on board before finalising the draft ensuring all required facilities to be provided to senior citizens”, the official maintained.

After implementation of the ordinance, the Ministry of Social Welfare also intends to open senior citizens homes all over the country with the first of its kind in the federal capital.
