'Substandard milk causes ailment'

By SIKANDER SHAHEEN August 29, 2008

The owners of dairy shops revealed that majority of the milkmen try to accumulate maximum milk from their cattle. For this purpose, they use injections, medicines and other modes of diet that are harmful for human beings. “But they are not checked by the food department. The food inspectors dole out heavy amounts of bribes from milkmen and allow them to endanger the lives of people”, alleged one such milk vendor.

Dr Rana Jawad, a veterinary doctor, told this scribe that use of injections and other harmful steroids being given to milk producing animals is extremely harmful for human beings as well as those animals. He revealed that stomach cancer, toxics, weakness of bones, and other fatal brain diseases can emerge as a consequence of usage of altered milk.

He said that several tetra packs contain harmful chemicals that can create health hazards as well. “Even some prominent multinationals are selling the milk with toxic chemicals”, he mentioned

The sale of substandard milk not only poses serious life threats but it is also fleeces the consumers who resort to such milk since the tetra packs that are available in the market are getting unaffordable for common masses. The hegemony of milkmen to fleece the consumers and endanger their lives calls for stern action on part of Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Livestock. The residents have demand of the government to bring to book those food inspectors who accept bribes from milkmen and allow them to play with the lives of masses.
