Delay in aid to land Pakistan in trouble: PEW

Source: Our Staff Reporter September 28, 2008

“Islamabad is running out of dollars at an alarming rate and delay in provision of money will only make it hard to manage. We are left with no other short-term option but to get immediate support of 5 to 8 billion US dollars, Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) President Dr. Murtaza Mughal said in a statement issued on Sunday. He said that the lenders would also hand over a long ‘wish list’ to Pakistan, which will create social unrest in the country. Therefore, government should focus on medium and long-term policies, as we cannot depend on ‘Friends’ forever.

He said such forums waste no time in granting aid immediately to any other country but when it comes to Pakistan, the matter is delayed. Delayed loans simply means increased bailout costs, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.

He said that government should not obey all the directives of failed institutions, which have been exposed after destroying economies of half of the world.

The policies of International Financial Institutions have resulted in unemployment, unrest and economic downturn, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.

The lenders would always target poor and lower middle class, which is damaging the fabric of society.
