SC orders to hold polls in NA-55
December 30, 2009
The Supreme Court (SC) has approved the petition filed by Awami Muslim League (AML) Chief Sheikh Rashid Wednesday. The SC directed the Election Commission to hold polls in NA-55 Rawalpindi. Talking to media, Sheikh Rashid termed the verdict as the defeat of Punjab government. The SC three-member bench verdict said all the institutions are bound to comply with the orders given by Election Commission, adding the EC is an independent institution. The court said the electoral process be restored from where it was stanched. The verdict said the Lahore High Court (LHC) ruling that the EC should consult with the government, is tantamount to affecting the independence of the Commission.
