SA okays renaming Nawabshah after Benazir Bhutto
By ZAMIR SHEIKH July 1, 2008 KARACHI - The Sindh Assembly on Monday unanimously passed the Sindh Land Revenue (Amendment) Bill, 2008, and adopted a resolution seeking official passports for its members and their families.
Law Minister Mohammad Ayaz through a motion, titled “The Sindh Land Revenue (Amendment) Bill, 2008, sought the insertion of section 6-A in the Sindh Land Revenue Act 1967.
“The 6-A, renaming of a district or taluka- notwithstanding the provisions contained in section 5 and 6, if the provincial assembly has passed or passes a resolution to the effect that a district or a taluka may be re-named, the government shall by a notification, rename the said district or taluka, as the case may be”.
In the statement of objects and reason, it said, the government is empowered under section 5 and 6 of the Sindh Land Revenue Act, 1967, to create districts or talukas in the province. In order to empower the government for renaming the district or taluka, as the case may be after the names of prominent personalities, who rendered outstanding services to the nation, it is expedient to amend the Sindh Land Revenue Act, 1967.
