Arbitrary rise in milk price irk Karachiites

Published: August 05, 2008

KARACHI (APP) - Retailers have unilaterally raised prices of dairy milk by Rs. 4 to Rs. 44 a litre in the metropolis, consumers said here Monday.
Adnan Ahmed, a resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal Block 13-D said that this was the biggest raise that too in a short span, as it was only some time back that retailers had announced to increase the cost of the essential commodity.
The raise was even then challenged by the City District Government - Karachi’s concerned authority, which however did not budge the sellers of the essential commodity. This is disappointing as nobody is checking milk sellers raising prices without any fear, he noted.
A house-wife in Liaquatabad said that City District Government has failed to keep milk retailers under control. They do not listen to anybody and they do not have any fear, she maintained. She said that poor man cannot buy milk for his children at this rate.
It may be recalled that CDGK has failed to force milk retailers to sell milk at its old prescribed prices. The new increase has posed a challenge to the authority of CDGK.
Faiz Ali, a milk retailer in the same area said that milk price has been increased after the wholesalers raised its prices. Joint secretary Karachi Dairy Farmers Association Shaukat Mukhtar said that wholesalers have enhanced the price of milk by only Rs 60 per maund (37.5 litres) due to sky-rocketing input prices.
