“In fact, we are getting only Rs 50 as the middlemen charge Rs 10 on the transportation of one cane of 37.5 litre,” he argued. “We were selling milk at Rs 1370 per maund in wholesale. Now we are selling it at Rs. 1430 per maund. The increase is only Rs 1.6 on each litre”, he added.
He pointed out that dairy farmers have increased wholesale prices due to exorbitant rise in the prices of feed stock and transportation cost.
“The price of wheat bran has increased from Rs 200 to Rs 450 per 34 kg, wheat straw from Rs 130 to Rs 200 and maize from Rs 500 to Rs 800 per 34 kg due to unchecked export”, he opined. Mukhtar said dairy farmers are paying a transportation cost of Rs 60,000 for a truck loaded with khalli ( oil cake). Previously, we were paying Rs 25,000 for the same truck.
He said that wholesalers cannot force retailers to reduce prices. It is the job of City District Government Karachi. He urged the government to stop export of feed stock to lower its prices and ensure its availability in the country. Besides, the government can provide a subsidy on the transportation so that dairy farmers can lower wholesale milk prices, he noted.
