Ignominy in the name of security

By Javed Mehmood October 5, 2008

After the recent tragic and gory bomb blast at Marriott Hotel in Islamabad, a sordid chapter of humiliation of the countrymen has started especially the passengers and the motorists in the name of security.

Whenever a major incident of bomb blast takes place in any part of the country, we immediately hear the news of the “red alert” declared in the country that ultimately leads to the insult and disgrace of the people for a certain period of time. This exercise that is unpleasant for the countrymen, but indispensable for the cops, comes to an end when the security hawks find nothing during a week-long or weeks-long campaign of tight security.

Undoubtedly it is the prime duty of the security officials to take pre-emptive measures to avert the incidents of militancy and terrorism in the country. But it does not mean that the security officials, especially the cops, leave no stone unturned to ignominy the people in the name of security.

Two passengers, who individually travelled from Hyderabad to Karachi after Eid holidays, have narrated separate incidents of strict checking of the bus passengers.

At one place, two bearded Pushtoon passengers, who boarded a Karachi-bound coach from Hyderabad, were asked by the policy-men, deputed at the National Highway, to remove their caps and shows. The cops also resorted to the body search of ‘Pathans’, who looked like suspects to the cops. This humiliating process of two Pushtoon brothers was carried out before dozens of the other passengers of the bus.
