Ignominy in the name of security
By Javed Mehmood October 5, 2008 Interestingly, the cops used metal detector for the search for all the other passengers, but took ‘extra security checking’ for the two Pushtoons. What impression and what kind of image the Pushtoon passengers would have taken from this sordid process of their search by the cops. Why the policemen did not use gadgets and devices in frisking Pushtoons and why they were humiliated publicly.
In another case, the second passenger said that the coach was stopped at three different places for security checking (from Hyderabad-Karachi). “We had to wait for half hour or even more at every checking spot because of the long queue of the buses, stopped for the security clearance,” said the passenger. “I could not attend the office on Friday and got late because of repeated checking and long-queues of the coaches.”
Why the people are humiliated in the name of ‘tight security’ after every shocking incident of terrorism, he asked the question?
Worth noting is that the recent encounter in Karachi between the policemen and the hardened criminals of a banned militant outfit had been applauded by all and sundry in Karachi and in the country as well. Because in this case the police acted wisely on a tip-off and did a marvellous job by pre-empting the possibility of terrorism in Karachi and by killing the most wanted militants on the spot that too without humiliating the locals.
