'Teachers' Day merely a ploy to mint money'

By SYED JAFAR ASKARI October 5, 2008

KARACHI - The representatives of teachers’ community have declared the occasion of “World Teachers Day” as an effective source of minting money for the officials of the education department saying it was difficult for teachers to gain dignity and honour in illiterate societies like in Pakistan.

College teachers are waiting for their arrears for the last eight years while the bureaucracy is doing nothing except paying tributes to them instead of solving their problems, they alleged.

World Teachers Day is celebrated on October 5 every year to acknowledge significant role of teachers in imparting education to young people and adults.

This year the day was observed with the emphasis on developing teacher-friendly policies.
