Wajih calls for granting autonomy to provinces
Source: Our STAFF REPORTER June 7, 2008 KARACHI-Former Supreme Court Judge Wajeehuddin Ahmed on Saturday opined that eastern European countries, former USSR and Yugoslavia were disintegrated due to the iron curtain policies and lack of provincial autonomy to their Federating units.
Prominent jurist was speaking at a seminar on provincial autonomy hosted by Sindh United Party.
He observed that that US was a successful State because of provincial autonomy.
He said that India granted provincial autonomy but our rulers denied provincial autonomy to the provinces .
He also cited that no Indian can buy land in Indian Kashmir nor any Indian can be registered as voter there and Indian Kashmir's autonomy is guaranteed in Indian Constitution.
The former judge also proposed that a new Karachi City should be established near Port Qasim.
All the old buildings such as Sindh Assembly, Khaliqdina Hall, Merewether Tower, etc, should be constructed there and original Sindhis should settle there.
He said that those Sindhi Hindus, who had to migrate under compulsion due to India's partition, should also be allowed to come back and settle in the proposed new Karachi City.
The proposal evoked instant but mixed reaction. Those who welcomed had clapped and those disagreed shouted: no.
