Public transport mess further worsens in City

June 8, 2008

KARACHI (PPI) - The public transport problem has further worsened in the biggest city and economic lifeline of the country, Karachi, as the new elected government has also failed to devise and implement a solid strategy to provide some relief to millions of Karachi commuters.

After the recent general polls and forming of PPP-led coalition government in Sindh, it was expected that the new set of rulers would come forward with a scientific approach to solve the thorny public transport issue in Karachi, which is third most pressing problem faced by the Karachi after lawlessness and joblessness.

However, the new provincial transport ministry bosses, so far, seem paying lip service to this serious issue. They justify their inaction in the plea that 80percent of transport-related departments and powers rests with the City District Government Karachi (CDGK), which has failed to deliver.

The present City District Government Karachi (CDGK) after coming into power gave a flurry of statements on the public transport issues. It promised to bring 8000 new CNG buses, besides reviving the KCR. It was also announced that a Korean bus-making firm had been allotted precious land near Raqazabad, where a modern CNG bus-making plant would be set up and new CNG buses would soon ply on city roads; however, soon all this hype went up in smoke, and

Karachi was back to square one regarding its public transport issue.
