Karachi Nazim works hard

By Yusuf Khan October 10, 2008

Sadly and strangely the PPP had never relished any good track record about local bodies it so far never held any such elections and preferred nominated guys over elected ones. This is hard to digest it despite huge democratic credentials of the PPP. And JI and PML-N and even small ANP cherish no love for elected city set up led by Mustafa Kamal and Nasreen Jalil. Her people call her ‘baji’ so far she has not proved elder sister for the city. The only election she won was of Naib Nazima; the city failed to choose her for the national assembly. However NJ is cool in the city council, where she absorbs top opponents and allows them to vent their emotions.

Before Mustafa Kamal, there is a chain of those who worked for the city and chiefly selflessly. I remember when young son of JI’s Sattar Afghani was injured while hoisting the national flag; the mayor of Karachi had no money to even rent a private room for him in civil hospital. Khaliq Afghani died that night after struggling for hours. Sattar Afghani was a changed man since that tragedy but he refused to allow his personal feelings and continued to work for the metropolis. That was his greatness.
