Karachi Nazim works hard

By Yusuf Khan October 10, 2008

Farooq Sattar of MQM followed him; he served the city well and surprised his friends and foes. He set his own example and won score of usually traditional angry hearts and minds. FS treated all areas with equal attention and left no stone unturned to improve city’s image; he never tried to improve his own; he never needed it.

Indeed, this is no easy task to make all happy in Karachi; this is unhappy, angry and restless city, where religious extremists failed to win peoples’ hearts but they are never found abandoning their designs. I remember one gathering where Shahi Syed, ANP leader had all the praise for Taliban and he dubbed them as ‘nuclear weapon’ of Pakhtoons in the city. When they attacked his boss Asfandyar Wali, he was cursing them. This is the beauty of ethnic politics; it has no rules of the game.

But Mustafa Kamal is no ethnic leader he has come a long way to secure confidence of the citizens and trust of MQM chief Altaf Hussain. MK has achieved sufficient in short span of time; he needs to be open and available. There is no point in being arrogant when he has enough on his plate. The city and its citizens love him and admire him; he must reciprocate. There is no term fixed for love and affection but for the Nazim, it is just four-year. This is politics.
