By SYED INTIKHAB ALI August 12, 2008

KARACHI - The century-old Jewish graveyard, considered the second cemetery of the community in Karachi, has been found in dilapidated condition at Jamila Street in the Mewashah Graveyard, Usmanabad.

The Jewish community used to reside in Ramsawamy, Ranchore Line and Soldier Bazaar till late 1970s and bury their dead bodies in the said cemetery.

It is pertinent to mention here that so far this scribe is the only journalist who, for the first time, unearthed the knowledge regarding the Jewish graveyard through some old residents and sextons in the locality.

The first cemetery of the Jewish community is located in the same Mewashah Graveyard limits in the Raxerline, a few kilometers away from the second one situated in Usmanabad at Jameela Street. Around 40 to 50 graves of Jewish people found in the graveyard situated in the limits of Katchi Memon graveyard. These graves have been separated from those of the Memon community but situated in the same graveyard.

The old residents of the area told The Nation that there is another Jewish cemetery in the Mewashah Graveyard surroundings but no one noticed the dilapidated condition of the graves there. Mewashah Graveyard has also been used by various communities for the burial of their dead bodies including Christians, Hindus, Jews, Behaies and others.
